    • The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), a public research university, is a regional branch of the University of Minnesota. The Duluth campus covers 244 acres and is home to the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium, the Tweed Museum of Art and the Marshall Performing Arts Center. UMD offers 13 bachelor degrees in 75 majors, graduate degrees in more than 20 fields, three PhD programs and advanced medical and pharmacy programs. In 2009, UMD had an enrollment of 11,664 students. As part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the UMD Bulldogs compete on the NCAA Division II level in sports such as basketball, volleyball, football, track and field, baseball and softball, and on the Division I level in ice hockey.

    The College of St. Scholastica

    • The College of St. Scholastica is a private Catholic Benedictine college with a main 186-acre campus in Duluth and extended campuses in St. Paul, St. Cloud, Brainerd and Rochester. Founded in 1912 by a group of Benedictine Sisters, today the college educates more than 3,000 students in many undergraduate and graduate programs. The College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission, is a member of the North Central Association and has been named by "U.S. News & World Report" as a "Tier 1" regional university.
