Winona, Minnesota Colleges

Winona, Minn., which is about 95 miles southeast of St. Paul, is home to three colleges that grant certificates and associate, baccalaureate and graduate-level degrees in numerous fields. The colleges in Winona range from community colleges to public and private four-year institutions with religious affiliations, but they all offer students opportunities to learn both inside and outside of the classroom.
  1. Winona State University

    • Founded in 1858, Winona State University is a public, four-year institution with an enrollment of more than 8,400 undergraduate and graduate students. In 2010, "U.S. News and World Report" ranked the school 47th among all Midwestern universities that offer master's degrees. The highest-rated academic programs in the school include nursing, education and materials engineering, while its largest programs in terms of enrollment are the business administration and mass communications majors, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." Internships are available in most programs, and the school has study-abroad placements in 25 countries. In addition to participating in federal and state financial aid programs, the college offers a limited number of work-study grants. The college has 15 intercollegiate and 30 intramural sports teams, six Greek fraternities and sororities and more than 150 other student groups on campus.

    Saint Mary's University of Minnesota

    • The Roman Catholic Church founded St. Mary's University of Minnesota in 1912, and since that time, the college has grown to an enrollment of more than 5,500 undergraduate and graduate students. The top-rated academic programs at the university are physics, theology and education, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." Its largest programs in terms of enrollment are business, biology and social science. The college offers a variety of experiential learning opportunities, including for-credit internships, paid cooperative work placements, study abroad, undergraduate student-teaching positions and a semester-long travel study in Washington, D.C. About 94 percent of all freshmen and 88 percent of continuing students receive some type of financial aid while studying at St. Mary's, reports "Barron's." The school has 21 intercollegiate and 32 intramural sports teams, three Greek organizations and 80 student groups.

    Southeast Technical College

    • Southeast Technical College is a public, two-year institution with 2,500 students spread across its campuses, including the Winona branch. The college grants certificates, associate degrees and diplomas in more than 80 areas. The school's largest programs in terms of enrollment are nursing, medical office administration, supervisory management, accounting and microcomputer support. The college offers online and hybrid classes that combine online and classroom-based instruction in addition to its fully classroom-based courses. Sources of financial aid available to Southeast Technical students include federal and state grants and loans, work-study, veterans benefits, work rehabilitation funding and institutional scholarships. The college offers job placement assistance, and about 94 percent of students find employment in their chosen fields after graduation, according to the school's website. The college has seven student groups on campus.
