Students interested in becoming dental hygienists may enroll at Minnesota State University to earn an associate degree in the field. Coursework will cover taking x-rays, periodontal therapy, scaling, pain control measures, nitrous oxide sedation and patient education. Example classes include Head and Neck Anatomy, Oral Pathology, Dental Hygiene Principles and Clinical Affiliation. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to take the Central Regional Dental Testing Service exam.

Century College offers an associate degree in dental hygiene, which students may then transfer to Metropolitan State University to earn a bachelor's in dental hygiene after two more years. Students may also transfer their credits to the online college, Mankato State University, for further study resulting in a bachelor's degree. On-campus facilities include a 12-chair dentist's clinic, free dental services to children and an operational community dental clinic where students may experience real-world dental practice.

Lake Superior College admits 20 students per year into its associate of science dental hygiene degree program. The school offers an onsite clinic and real-world practice, plus the opportunity to transfer credits to an institution of higher learning. Coursework includes classes such as Dental Anatomy, Dental Materials, Pain Management, Community Dental Health, Dental Radiology, Developmental Head & Neck Anatomy and General & Oral Pathology. All program applicants must pass a health screening, be certified by the American Red Cross and be up to date on their immunizations, plus pass a criminal background check.
