Dental Hygienist Colleges

Dental hygienists offer an important line of defense between you and dental decay. According to the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA), an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in this field will require from 86 to 122 credit hours to qualify. Entry-level classes and programs leading to a degree are available. Some colleges also offer master's degrees in dental hygiene.

    • UCDH offers a 20-month bachelor's degree program in dental hygiene, saving a student almost two years vs. similar degree programs. The Utah College of Dental Hygiene is a private college that requires 33 credit hours or one year of general education before acceptance. An associate's degree may be the first route for many. The course is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

    Howard University College of Dentistry: Department of Dental Hygiene

    • Howard University in Washington, District of Columbia, has a college dedicated to the dental sciences. The Department of Dental Hygiene offers an accredited certificate of dental hygiene and has been teaching the subject since 1935. One of the school's stated goals is to recruit more African-Americans into the dental hygienist trade. The two-year course has prerequisites in science and general education and a minimum 2.5 grade point average (GPA).

    Idaho State University: Department of Dental Hygiene

    • Idaho State University's dental hygiene program offers a two-year bachelor's degree and a master's degree. Prerequisites for entry include a 2.5 GPA minimum in general education and natural sciences education and several courses, including English and a foundational class in dental hygiene.

    University of Nebraska: College of Dentistry

    • The UNMC College of Dentistry has a Department of Dental Hygiene that offers a four-year bachelor of science degree. About two years of study are required before entrance. The degree is completed through the College of Dentistry. The Medical Center, of which the College of Dentistry is part, is one of UNMC's four campuses. Prerequisites include general education courses and more specialized classes in topics like nutrition. A two-year predental course is followed by two years of dental hygienist training.
