Dental Hygienist Colleges in Oklahoma

Dental hygienists remove hard and soft deposits from teeth, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment of dental hygienists is expected to climb 36 percent through 2018. Median annual wages of hygienists in May 2008 were $66,570. In Oklahoma, where health care is a major industry, dental hygienists must be licensed by the state to practice. A few colleges in Oklahoma offer programs that train students to become dental hygienists.
  1. Tulsa Community College

    • The Tulsa Community College Dental Hygiene Program in Tulsa teaches students to gather information about a patient's health status, provide periodic oral cleanings, take X-rays and offer oral health instruction. Through the Associate degree program, dental hygiene students become eligible to complete national and state licensing exams. Prior to applying to the program, students must complete several prerequisite courses such as introductory organic and biochemistry, basic microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, U.S. history and algebra. Classes in the dental hygiene program cover dental and oral anatomy, pathology, periodontology, dental radiography techniques, dental hygiene pharmacology and dental pain management. Tulsa Community College was founded in 1970 and is accredited by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the Higher Learning Commission. The Tulsa Community College Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association in Chicago, Illinois.

    Rose State College

    • Rose State College's dental hygiene program in Midwest City offers several courses such as dental materials, periodontics, community dental health, pathology, anxiety and pain control, advanced clinical procedures and practice administration. Other required courses for an associate degree in dental hygiene include fundamentals of speech, introductory chemistry, introduction to sociology, introduction to psychology, English and nutrition. Founded in 1970, Rose State College is accredited by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. The college also is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

    University of Oklahoma

    • Through the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, students can obtain their Bachelor's degrees in dental hygiene. The college is located on the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center campus in Oklahoma City. The Bachelor's degree requires at least two years of prerequisites and two years of dental hygiene courses. A career ladder program, called the RDH-to-BSDH Track, also is available for registered dental hygienists who already have their Associate degrees but want to earn their Bachelor's degrees. This program is especially suitable for working professionals. Dental hygiene courses at the University of Oklahoma include pediatric dentistry, geriatric dentistry, dental morphology, general/oral histology, preventative dentistry and ethics and jurisprudence. The curriculum also features a practicum and clinical rotations. The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry started in 1971 and is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. The University of Oklahoma, founded in 1890, is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
