Dental Hygienist Colleges Near Atlanta

Atlanta-area dental hygienist schools combine classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory practice and exams to prepare students for work after graduation. Dental hygienists work in the offices of dentists--sometimes directly beside them--to examine and clean a patient's teeth. An associate or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene is typically required.

    • Students can study dental hygiene at Georgia Perimeter College's Dunwoody campus, which is located only about 10 miles from Atlanta in the northern suburbs. There they can obtain an Associate of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. The two-year dental hygienist program at the community college requires a total of 37 to 39 credit hours of general education study and 39 credit hours of dental hygiene curriculum. Students must be accepted into the program, in addition to being accepted to Georgia Perimeter College. Students must maintain a grade point average of at least 75 percent or above in all dental hygiene courses to remain in the program.

    Clayton State University

    • Clayton State University is located in Morrow, Georgia, which is a suburb located about 15 miles south of Atlanta. Clayton State University offers two dental hygienist programs. Students who have completed an associate degree program in dental hygiene can enroll in the college's four-year registered dental hygienist to bachelor's in dental hygiene bridge program. Clayton State University also offers a bachelor's in dental hygiene program for those who are enrolled as first-year freshmen. Admission to the four-year college's two dental hygienist programs is competitive, and students must meet eligibility requirements in regards to grade point average, required core courses and admissions tests.

    West Georgia Technical College

    • West Georgia Technical College is located in nearby Douglasville, Georgia, a suburb that is located about 20 miles west of Atlanta. Students can obtain an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene at the Atlanta-area dental hygienist college. The program requires a minimum of 25 credit hours of general education curriculum---as with all majors at the community college. A minimum of 123 credit hours is required for successful completion of the program.
