The dental hygiene department of Georgia Perimeter College is located in its Dunwoody campus, about 20 miles from downtown Atlanta. Clayton State University is located about 15 miles from downtown Atlanta. It offers dental hygiene programs through their college of professional studies. The dental hygiene program has limited enrollment, and admits students based on their past academic work and future potential in the field of dental hygiene. The program is divided into two parts. During the first two years, the curriculum consists of general education courses. The second two years focuses on dental hygiene courses. Admission into the last two years requires a separate application in addition to the application for admission to the university.
Medix School's dental hygiene program is based in its Smyrna campus, located about 10 miles northwest of Atlanta. Students in this program are trained to provide preventative and therapeutic services to control oral disease symptoms and promote good oral hygiene. After graduating from this program, students are able to sit for a national written examination and clinical examination. They can become licensed to practice after they pass both exams.
The Gwinnett Dental Career Academy is located in Suwanee, a suburb in the outskirts of Atlanta. The academy is considered a stepping stone into higher positions within the dental industry. The school is privately owned and features lower tuition than other similar schools due to the small class sizes and facilities. Their basic 10-week dental assisting course teaches a range of subjects, including basic oral health, dental charting and dental radiography.
