Dental Hygiene Schools in Georgia

The Georgia Dental Hygienists's Association (GDHA), the organization that represents hygienists in Georgia, provides a listing of all dental hygiene schools in the state of Georgia. These schools offer students the opportunity to gain the education, training and experience necessary to be certified and practice alongside dentists. Proper educational opportunities in Georgia provide the first step toward employment.
  1. Lanier Technical College

    • Lanier, through its Oakwood campus, offers this program in combination with Gainesville State College. Graduates receive a diploma from Lanier and an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree from Gainesville. Students are required to take a minimum of 20 credit hours at Gainesville in order to receive the degree. The courses at Gainesville are to be completed prior to starting at Lanier. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. All of the core dental hygiene courses are taken at Lanier with the core general education courses, such as English, math and psychology, taken on the Gainesville campus. Completion takes approximately seven quarters with 83 credit hours required.

    Medical College of Georgia

    • Located in Augusta, the Medical College of Georgia offers a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and a Master of Science in Allied Health for Dental Hygiene. The bachelor's program requires completion of 60 hours of core courses at another school with an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene prior to transferring to the Medical College for the last two years of study. Those final two years can be either full- or part-time depending on whether the student is employed in a dental setting. All of the courses are directly related to dental hygiene, totaling 65 credit hours. The master's program is for graduates with the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree. It is for students seeking opportunities beyond a clinical dental practice, such as research.

    Darton College

    • Located in Albany, Darton College offers the Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene, the type that is needed for transfer to the Medical College of Georgia in order to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree. This program is certified and requires five semesters of study, including one summer.

    Armstrong Atlantic State University

    • Armstrong calls Savannah its home city. It offers an Associate of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene along with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene Education. This allows a student to obtain a bachelor's degree without having to transfer from one school to another. It is required that upon obtaining the associate degree, the student take and pass the necessary exams to become licensed. The courses for the bachelor's degree are offered in late afternoon and evening to allow students to work as dental hygienists while pursuing the bachelor's degree program.
