New Orleans Community Colleges

Students interested in a community college education in New Orleans can choose between nine active campuses and technical department sites in the city and its suburbs. New Orleans's largest institute of higher learning, Delgado Community College, operates all nine locations in the region. Accepting its first students in 1921, it is the state's oldest community college. Today, the college offers technical and occupational training and pre-baccalaureate programs. It is part of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.
  1. Charity School of Nursing Campus

    • Admitting students twice yearly, this school offers three learning tracks: registered nursing and practical nursing programs and an associate degree in nursing. Students gain clinical experience during the course of the program. The school offers a course for those curious about the profession as well as a refresher course for registered nurses looking to reenter the career.

    City Park Campus

    • The original site of Delgado Community College, the City Park Campus offers more than 60 academic programs, according to the Delgado Community College website. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina and the resulting flooding damaged a majority of the buildings on the City Park Campus, including the Moss Memorial Library building. As of August 2010, the campus had reopened roughly 1/3 of its 25 buildings accommodating students and operations, the college website reported.

    Maritime, Fire and Industrial Training Facility

    • The training facility offers both company-specific courses and training approved by U.S. Coast Guard. The subjects taught at this location are specific to the maritime and industrial sectors and include firefighting, radar and safety courses.

    Northshore-Slidell

    • Courses offered at the Northshore-Slidell facility include those in the arts, business and science. This location houses a library, tutoring lab and computer lab. Students at the Northshore locations can also use the West Bank and City Park campuses' facilities.

    • The Northshore-Covington location houses courses in a wide array of subjects, from early childhood education to horticulture. Students at this location are also able to use the resources of the West Bank and City Park campuses.

    West Bank Campus

    • The West Bank campus is New Orleans's only public higher-education institution west of the Mississippi River. This location offers classes in arts, business, technology and science associate degree and professional certificate programs. In addition to traditional classrooms and a tiered lecture hall, the West Bank Campus of Delgado Community College includes faculty offices, a fitness center, laboratories and a student services center.

    Technical Division Sites

    • In August 2010, Louisiana Technical College Region 1 became Delgado Community College's Technical Division. The division offers technical diplomas and certificates of technical study in accounting, automotive, cosmetology, culinary arts, HVAC, welding and other areas.

      In 2005, Hurricane Katrina damaged the Sidney N. Collier site, forcing it to close. College administration relocated the location's cosmetology program to the West Jefferson site. As of 2010, the site remained closed.
