Xavier University of Louisiana is a private, four-year university, offering degrees in English, biology, philosophy, music, art, computers, chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences. Students wishing to further their education may enroll in several master's programs. While enrolled at Xavier, students may take part in academic clubs (theology, marketing, history, pharmacy) and academic honor societies, plus traditional black social sororities and fraternities. Other on-campus groups include the National Association of Black Accountants, National Society of Black Engineers, Toast Masters, Nubian Expressions, Caribbean Students Association and Pre-Dental Club. Athletic-minded students may be interested in a sports team at Xavier, including basketball, tennis, cross country and volleyball. Xavier also offers an Institute for Black Catholic Studies for its graduate students, taking place over the summer. Students at Xavier are eligible for scholarships, grants and loans.

Grambling State University offers a public four-year bachelor's degree program (a small selection of master's degrees are available as well) in fields such as family nurse practitioner, criminal justice, leisure studies, special education, applied music, biology, computer science and economics. Grambling offers a variety of ways for students to get involved, including pageants for Miss Grambling State University and Miss Calendar Girl, the student union board, campus ministry, marching band, choir and the dance company. Academic clubs include the art guild, association of computer machinery, National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, National Association of Black Journalists, Grambling Council of Black Engineers & Scientists and the chemistry club. Grambling also has chapters on campus of traditional black sororities and fraternities. Students receiving federal financial aid must adhere to strict academic guidelines.

Students interested in earning a two-year associate's degree (or certificate or diploma) at a traditionally black college may be interested in pursuing an education at the Southern University at Shreveport. Programs of study include emergency management technician, music technology, web development, surgical technology, day care administration, dental hygiene, funeral services administration and accounting. A variety of scholarships are available, along with grants and loans. Students may get involved at Southern University by joining clubs such as the Afro-American society, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, electronics technology club, business club or participate in dance, newspaper or yearbook activities. Students interested in sports may join the school's basketball team or take advantage of the health center, with a weight room and dance center.
