Librarians are responsible for performing research, classifying materials, and helping patrons and students find information with the latest information technology. For most librarians, a master's degree is required in library science. These universities offer library science programs that prepare students for careers as librarians as well as entry into the field of information science.

    • Southern Connecticut State University offers a master's degree program in library science. Students must complete a total of 12 courses within a period of no more than six years to earn a master's degree in library science. Core courses include introduction to information science and technology, foundations of librarianship, library management, and information analysis and organization.

    Appalachian State University

    • Appalachian State University offers students the opportunity to earn a Master of Library Science degree. This university has offered library science courses for more than 70 years. This program offers five tracks of study to choose from, and three of the five tracks are for school library media. One of the school library media tracks requires students who have an A-level license, the second requires an M-level license and the third requires a Master of Education degree. The other two tracks are the public library track and the dual track for school and public library.

    University of North Carolina

    • The University of North Carolina offers a Master of Science degree program in library science that is designed to be completed in two years. This program prepares students to enter into the field of library science in positions of library administration, records management, and public and reference services. Courses include information retrieval, organization of materials, management for information professionals and human information interactions.

    San José State University

    • San José State University offers a master's degree program in library and information science that is delivered entirely online. The program offers 10 specialization options for students to choose from, which include academic libraries, teacher librarianship, public libraries and youth librarianship. Core courses include information and society, information organizations and management, and information retrieval.

    Wayne State University

    • Wayne State University offers a master's degree in library and information science that prepares students for leadership roles in information organizations such as a library. Students have the option of completing the program on campus or online, and they are required to take courses that include information technology, introduction to the information profession, organization of knowledge and access to information.
