Masters programs in library science provide students with a solid education that is necessary for professional positions in libraries and related environments. A handful of universities in the state of Pennsylvania offer masters programs in library science.
  1. Kutztown University

    • Kutztown University offers a Master of Library Science degree that prepares graduates for positions in the growing library science field. Students gain many professional library skills such as organization and maintenance of multi-media reference collections. The program requires six semester credit hours of preparatory courses in library science and 30 semester credit hours of core courses. Core coursework includes library research methods, social sciences literature, school library media center administration, automated library systems management, creating multimedia collections for libraries, public library services, libraries and mass media and government publications. Students are also required to complete six semester credit hours of electives in other areas.

    University of Pittsburgh

    • A Master of Library and Information Science degree is offered by the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. The degree program requires 36 credits that can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Core coursework includes understanding information, organizing and maintaining information, information policy, legal issues in handling information, information technology, history of books and publishing, cataloging and classification, indexing and reference resources. Students can specialize in archives and records management, school library and health sciences. Students can complete field experiences and a practicum in library environments.

    Drexel University

    • The iSchool at Drexel University offers a Master of Science in Library and Information Science degree. The program is flexible and students can complete their education on campus and online. Students must complete 45 credit hours that include required courses and elective courses. Core coursework includes information organizations management, information organizations research, information systems foundations, information users and services and information resources. Students can specialize in one of six concentrations: archival studies, digital libraries, competitive intelligence and knowledge management, school library media, library and information services and youth services.
