Art History Degree Programs

Studying the history of art not only aids in art appreciation, it leads to a better understanding of the culture that produced it. If you get a degree in art history, you can move on to careers in museums, art agencies and galleries. You might work in appraisal or as a curator, or use the degree to improve your own art and design. Courses vary considerably: Some incorporate practical elements like studio time or overseas visits, whereas others lean toward a more theoretical approach.
  1. Breyer State University

    • Breyer State University offers an online Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art history. The course covers a variety of periods and art types, including Asian art and medieval art from Europe. The degree is designed to help you learn what is unique about each type of art and what significance it has. You study a core set of courses that includes an introduction to art theory and philosophy. Then you choose seven electives from different cultures ranging from Egyptian to Greek. After the electives, you take a final theory class in the practical application of art history.

This is an open, 120-hour course that you can start at any time and complete at your own pace. To take the course, you need a General Educational Development diploma (GED) or high school diploma. You can pay for each unit separately and must finish each unit in 10 weeks.

    Hollins University

    • The Hollins Bachelor of Arts in Art History degree course takes you through a series of classes until your senior semester, where you present your original research in a manner more commonly seen in postgraduate settings, according to the school's website. The art history program focuses on classical and ancient art, along with European and American art from the 19th and 20th centuries. There is a strong focus on women in art--both as artists and as subjects. An example course is "What If Michelangelo Had Been a Woman?" You take 12 courses, for a total of 44 credits, but the school advises prospective students to obtain a working knowledge of French, German and art-related literature.

Visiting art historians share their experience, and students also learn from exhibits at the school's art museum, the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum. The school encourages you to take exchange trips and internships so that your studies have a practical side. Hollins is proud of its achievements, boasting that its graduates work at the Smithsonian Institution, Yale University Art Gallery and other high-profile galleries.

    San Francisco Art Institute

    • The San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) is a specialized art school offering nothing but arts programs. SFAI's Bachelor of Arts in History and Theory of Contemporary Art focuses on contemporary art rather than classic, helping students to draw connections between art and society. The course demonstrates how some arts have been suppressed, while disciplines such as feminism have found artistic expression. Thus, the course not only talks about art directly, but about the way it is used as a sign of the times.

In this program students work with artists, historians and others who work in the field of art history or in related fields like anthropology. The course requires 120 units, including 33 units of liberal arts studies such as writing, mathematics and critical thinking; 54 units of art history, theory and criticism; 15 units of hands-on studio art; and 18 units of electives chosen to complement your particular interests and focus.
