Art Therapy College Programs

Art therapy, a subsidiary of the Humanistic counseling methodology, focuses on a balance between the body, mind, spirit and emotions. Art therapists utilize an evaluative approach to a client's artistic efforts to assess emotional states. Individuals choosing to pursue a career in art therapy must acquire an undergraduate degree with relevant art and psychological studies, obtain a master's degree in art therapy and complete a minimum of 1,000 supervised professional hours.
  1. Naropa University

    • Naropa University offers a master of arts in transpersonal counseling psychology with a degree concentration in art therapy. The 62-credit-hour program is approved by the American Art Therapy Association and includes 25 weeks of practical experience during the first two years of the program. The third year of the program is spent entirely in full-time clinical internship. Individuals choosing to pursue the concentration in art therapy must obtain 32 credit hours in related courses, which include a minimum of 180 hours of studio art. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to complete the postgraduate obligations to register with the American Art Therapy Association. Prospective students must have acquired 18 credit hours in studio art and 12 credit hours in psychology prior to application, although students in their final year of undergraduate work are encouraged to apply.

    The Adler School of Professional Psychology

    • The Adler School of Professional Psychology offers a postgraduate master of arts in counseling psychology with a concentration in art therapy. The program is 61 credit hours in length and educates students in the psychological theories associated with Alfred Adler; it also provides multiple clinical opportunities to apply newly developed therapy skills. Students will receive 700 hours of art therapy clinical experience. The program is offered as both a full- and part-time option and full-time students attending year round can complete the academic requirements within two years. Applicants must possess an undergraduate degree with a grade point average of at least 3.0, 12 credit hours in psychology, 18 credit hours in studio art and a portfolio of 15 original art pieces. Graduates of the program are required to obtain a minimum of 1000 hours of supervised professional experience prior to applying for Art Therapy Registration (ATR). Graduates must first write the Illinois Licensed Professional Counselor Examination before beginning the post-education hours.

    New York University

    • The master of arts in art therapy at New York University teaches students to integrate two branches of learning, visual art and psychotherapy, to offer future clients effective psychological treatment. The two-year program requires 49 credit courses and offers a range of clinical placements for practical learning opportunities. Upon completion of the credit requirements, students research and write a final project on a specific area of interest within the field of art therapy. Prospective students must obtain an undergraduate degree that includes at least 12 psychology credits, 12 studio art credits and 30 social science or liberal arts credits.
