Minnesota's Adler Graduate School attracts students interested in art therapy careers. Founded in 1967 by an Austrian social psychologist, the school today is a graduate school that offers counseling and psychotherapy master's programs, including art therapy. Students prepare for careers as art therapists with coursework in studio art, psychology and a portfolio of original artwork.

New York University has been training art therapists since the 1950s. The Steinhardt School offers a master's in art therapy as well as post-master's courses for continuing development of professionals in art therapy. Courses include art for art therapists, family art therapy, pictorial and sculptural analysis and art therapy with adults and the elderly. Teachers in the art therapy program include professionals in the fields of psychiatry, psychoanalysis and art therapy.

Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California, is an independent Catholic master's university in operation since 1851. The university offers undergraduate and graduate studies and has a graduate psychology program that offers a master of arts in art therapy and an advanced standing master of arts in art therapy. The advanced degrees lead to registration as an art therapist. Courses include personality theory, abnormal psychology, art therapy techniques, elder care and metaphors in psychopathology.
