Rhode Island School of Design offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in fiber arts. Undergraduate studies include focus on individual expression through mediums, such as knitting and dyeing, weaving, silk screening, and print design. Undergraduate students specializing in fiber art study weaving, embroidery, knitting and silk screening. The graduate program in fiber arts emphasizes professional studio, philosophies, and scholarly competence. Courses on direct and resist dye techniques, screen-printing and embellishment, pattern design, weaving and dying processes, embroidery, felt-making and more, are the focus of the graduate program.
Cranbrook Academy of Art offers graduate degree programs with an emphasis on studio-based experience and mentoring by artists-in-residence. Individual studio spaces are available for all fiber students, as well as computer labs, floor looms, video and photo equipment, and a darkroom. The Cranbrook Museum of Art, which houses modern and contemporary art and design, and architecture, is located on campus. Fiber students further explore and develop their skills through critiques, seminar discussions, travel, visiting artists and critics, research projects and lectures.
