Louisiana Art Schools

Louisiana's economy is driven by the extraction of salt, natural gas, petroleum and sulfur from the state's rich coastline. The area has been hit hard in recent years, first by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and then by the gulf oil spill in 2010, but it has slowly begun to recover. Despite the region's strong links to exploration and mining, it has a rich cultural and artistic heritage that is very much alive, thanks in part to a number of art schools that operate there.
  1. Northwestern State University of Louisiana

    • Northwestern State University of Louisiana offers three professional art degrees that seek "to challenge, inspire and direct students to successful careers in the visual arts." Prospective undergraduates can choose between bachelor's programs in fine arts and graphic communications; postgraduate applicants can study for a master's degree in art. The school focuses on painting, drawing, sculpture, graphic design, photography and ceramics.

Louisiana State University School of Art

    • Louisiana State University's School of Art provides a range of programs, including ceramics, printmaking, painting and drawing, digital art and sculpture, to about 500 undergraduate and graduate students. The school seeks to foster an environment where students can explore their own creativity and artistic voice while learning about art history and contemporary art theory.

    Centenary College of Louisiana

    • The art and visual culture department at Centenary College of Louisiana has close links to the local community and frequently provides its students with access to regional artists and exhibitions. The department provides comprehensive training in areas such as art analysis, drawing, film and video production, new media, painting, photography, sculpture and art history. Tutors help students to develop their coursework in line with their professional interest and areas of expertise.

    Xavier University Department of Art

    • Xavier University offers two bachelor's degrees in art, one in art and one in art education. The former seeks to provide students with the skills they'll need for a career as a professional artist; the second focuses on equipping prospective primary and secondary school teachers with the knowledge required to succeed in the classroom. Applicants to either course must demonstrate special ability in the field.
