Art Therapy Undergraduate Schools

Art therapy is the combined disciplines of psychology (counseling) and art and is a process that is used to help individuals, especially children, with mental illness or general therapy. To become a qualified art therapist, a master's degree is required from an accredited school. There are schools in the United States that offer a bachelor's degree in art therapy in order to prepare students for the master's program and its requirements.
  1. Marylhurst University

    • As a private liberal arts institution founded on catholic principles, Marylhurst University offers a certificate, post-baccalaureate program, bachelor's degree and master's degree in art therapy. The school in the only university that offers an accredited Master of Arts in Art Therapy Counseling program in the Pacific northwest. Designed to prepare students for the master's program, the art therapy counseling bachelor degree program gives the student the option to earn their degree in art (103 credits), psychology (93 credits) or an interdisciplinary study of both (63 credits of each major). All three programs prepare students for the master's program. The post-baccalaureate option is available for students who do not possess enough credits in art and psychology to take the required preparatory coursework.

    University of Indianapolis

    • The Department of Art & Design at the University of Indianapolis offers 100 majors, including a Bachelor of Science degree program in Pre-Art Therapy. The program is designed to provide students who plan on becoming an art therapist all the necessary coursework to be accepted into a master's degree program in art therapy. The department features one of Indiana's first non-toxic Intaglio printmaking studios and hosts monthly art shows in which national, regional and local artists' works are displayed.

    Endicott University

    • Located in Beverly, Massachusetts, The School of Visual and Performing Arts at Endicott University offers a fine arts bachelor degree with a concentration in creative arts therapy. This program is a pre-professional degree incorporating courses in psychology, creative arts therapy and studio art. During senior year, students must complete two phases of a senior thesis project. They must also undergo three internships in years 1, 2 and 4 of the program.
