Accredited Art Therapy Schools

Art therapy schools prepare students to work with patients by using various forms of art for therapeutic purposes. The American Art Association sets the professional standards for which art therapy is practiced and performed in the United States. To practice as an art therapist, most students have to complete a Masters degree. In some cases, students complete a doctorate, or PhD. Students wishing to practice art therapy have to complete a counseling degree with an emphasis on art, or a Masters in art therapy. There are many accredited universities where graduate training in art therapy is offered.

    Lesley University

    • Some students would prefer to obtain a Doctorate in art therapy. A PhD program takes longer than a Masters, but may qualify art therapists for additional training and career choices. Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts is one program that offers a PhD program in expressive art therapy. They were founded in 1975 and were one of the first universities in the United States to train students in art therapy. Lesley also is a low-residency program, which allows students to travel to the campus three weeks a year, while living off campus the rest of the time. PhD students considering Lesley must first have a Masters degree.

    Distance learning

    • Some art therapy students would prefer to do the bulk of their coursework through online curriculum and distance learning. Students work with professors and students through an online curriculum, while still receiving training through field experience and internships. A few colleges and graduate programs provide the opportunity for students to complete much of their coursework through distance and online learning. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana offers a Masters in Art therapy. Students work with registered art therapists in their area while continuing courses online. Prescott College also has a Master in Counseling and Psychology with a concentration in Expressive Art Therapy.
