Accredited Physical Therapy Assistant Schools

Physical therapy helps people improve their mobility. Physical therapy assistants work with doctors of physical therapy, using techniques that include hydrotherapy and ultrasound. The education required to become a physical therapy assistant can typically be completed in two years. The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education has approved a number of schools across the country that offer programs in physical therapy assisting.
  1. San Diego Mesa College

    • Students can achieve an Associate of Science in physical therapy assisting at San Diego Mesa College by completing about 32 credits of study. Coursework includes pathology, therapeutic exercise and organization of physical therapy. Students also complete two directed clinical practice experiences, one in the third semester and one in the fourth semester, for a total of six credits. Clinical experience can be completed at either an in-patient or out-patient health care facility. A grade of "C" or better must be achieved in all classes, and course repetition is not allowed.

    Southern Illinois University

    • Southern Illinois University has an Associate of Applied Science degree for physical therapist assistants. The program can be completed in five semesters and provides students with both classroom learning and clinical hands-on experience. Courses include human anatomy, biology and interpersonal communication. Clinical rotations take place in hospitals and clinics throughout southern Illinois and in parts of neighboring states. Upon completion of the program, job placement assistance is provided by Southern Illinois University.

    LaGuardia Community College

    • LaGuardia Community College offers a physical therapist assistant degree program that results in an Associate of Applied Science. A total of 68 credit hours must be completed, including course work in clinical kinesiology, mobility skills in physical therapy and functional gait training skills. Students complete 50 volunteer hours in a supervised physical therapy setting before moving on to the clinical phase of the program. Clinical experience is split between three semesters for a total of eight credits of study.
