Admission Requirements to the USC Film School

Founded in 1929, the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) is one of the premier programs for studying film. U.S. News and World Report ranks USC's program among the top 10 in multimedia and visual communications. Getting into the film school can seem like an arduous process, especially since so few students are admitted in the program, but applying can be a simple process.
  1. General Application Form

    • To qualify for SCA, you need to fill out the official University of Southern California general application. The application asks for an applicant's name, social security number, mailing address, high school information and SAT/ACT scores. The general application also has a section for the applicant's personal statement and activity report.

    Other Requirements

    • SCA requires students submit personal letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters from teachers, specifically teachers involved in cinematic arts, carry more weight than general recommendation letters.

The general application requires a personal statement, and SCA requires a separate one that offers a personal statement about your art. You need to have this clearly labeled with the title "USC School of Cinematic Arts Personal Statement" and the page number at the top of each page.

SCA also needs a sample of your art in the form of a portfolio. SCA accepts video and written portfolios. Make sure to label the portfolio carefully, and include page numbers on a written portfolio.

    Fees

    • USC requires all applicants to pay an application fee of $65. This fee is non-refundable, and it is required for admission to USC. If you are accepted, a $300 to $500 deposit is required to hold your place at SCA.
