NYU's Law School Admission Requirements

New York University (NYU) law school consistently ranks among the top schools in the nation, especially in certain specialty areas, such as international law. This competitive school has equally competitive standards, however. In 2010, nearly 8,500 potential law students applied for admission to the school. Studying NYU law school's admission requirements before you apply will ensure you have the best chance of a spot in its following year's class.
  1. Application Form

    • NYU requires all applicants to complete its application form, as well as to have their dossiers evaluated and assembled by the Credential Assembly Service. The application form requires information such as previous work experience, extracurricular activities, college information and personal contact information. To apply, all applicants must be at least 18 years old.

    Law School Admissions Test

    • The Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) is required of all students applying to NYU law school. No certain score is required for entry, and no score guarantees that you will be accepted; however, admitted students consistently score well on the examination.

    Transcripts

    • To apply to the law school, include copies of your college transcripts. Applicants to NYU law school must have graduated from an accredited college or university. The transcripts provide proof that you followed the course of study at your institution and graduated. They also provide information such as your grade point average and the curriculum you studied. You do not need to have studied pre-law to be accepted by NYU's law school.

    Letter of Recommendation

    • NYU requires one letter of recommendation from each candidate. All applicants have the opportunity to include a second optional reference with their application. These letters should speak to your academic potential and personal qualities that make you a good fit for the institution.

    Personal Statement

    • NYU law school also requires each applicant to write a personal statement about a subject of her choice. Normally, applicants write about what drew them to a career in law and, more specifically, to NYU law school. In general, the more specific and focused your personal statement is, the better.
