Review a list of English-language abbreviations and highlight the ones you think are most important, or the ones you would like to learn. Read through the abbreviations in alphabetical sections to make the process of memorizing them easier. For example, begin by learning the abbreviations that start with "A," then move on to the "B" abbreviations. The Indiana University website provides a list of English-language abbreviations from the Oxford English Dictionary that you can print to help in this process.
Make flash cards to help you learn and memorize the many English abbreviations. Write the full word on one side of a note card and write its abbreviation on the other side. Have a friend or tutor hold the abbreviation side up and ask you to say the full word it represents.
Look up abbreviations in an abbreviation dictionary whenever you encounter one that is unfamiliar to you. Once you discover the full word counterparts of the abbreviations, then you can add it to your list of abbreviations to study as well as to your flash cards.
