How to Cite a Link in MLA

Modern Language Association (MLA) style is a set of rules and regulations for writing and formatting papers and reports. MLA style is most commonly used in the realm of the arts and humanities, rather than the sciences. It is crucial to cite the sources of your information and many of your sources will probably be websites. Once you understand the basic format, it is very easy to create a citation of any Internet link.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the website for its author and/or editor names. If you cannot find either, that is alright. Not all websites have published author and/or editor names. Your citation will not be any less reputable for not having an author.

    • 2

Note the article name, and the name of the actual website or project. These are two different things: the article name is a specific portion of the entire website. Both must be noted in an MLA style citation.

    • 3

If publishing information is available on the website, note the publisher name and date. Also determine when the website was last updated. This information is usually located at the bottom of the home page.

    • 4

You will also need the date that you accessed the website. For an MLA style paper, it is best to put the most recent date of access on your Works Cited list.

    • 5

Put all of the information you have gathered together into a single citation. The basic format for an MLA style website citation is such:

Author and/or editor (if documented on the website). Name of site. Name of sponsor or publisher, date of website creation (if available). Medium of publication. Most recent date of access.
