How to Cite Short Stories in APA Format

On occasion, you may use a fictional short story as a source in a research or academic paper. In these cases, you must cite the short story using the style guide maintained by the American Psychological Association. This style, commonly referred to as APA style, requires you to cite the story in the body of the paper where it is referenced, as well as in a reference list at the end of the paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the short story in the paper, right after a direct quotation or where you paraphrase key ideas. Separate the author's last name and the story's year of publication with a comma, and enclose the citation within parenthesis. For example:

Here is a paraphrased reference (Author's Last Name, Year).

    • 2

Create a reference list at the end of your paper or essay. Reference lists should be on their own page, with bibliographic information provided in alphabetical order by the author's last name -- or first word of the title, for works with unknown authors.

    • 3

Place the short story information on the reference list by listing the author's last name, then first initial, followed by a period.

    • 4

Enclose the publication year in parenthesis, and then follow with a period.

    • 5

List the story title, in quotes, followed by a period, then the title of the book the story appears in, then a comma, then the range of pages you referenced followed by a period.

For example: Last Name, Initial. (Year). "Title of Story." Book Title, Page -- Page.
