Inspection Requirements for a Mobile Crane Certification

There are a number of training programs available that allow mobile crane operators to do their own in-house inspections. Such training programs must be approved by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
  1. Mobile Crane Types

    • This certification applies to mobile cranes, which include telescoping boom cranes, boom trucks, industrial cranes (carry decks) and lattice boom cranes.

    Inspection Topics

    • Inspection requirements include how to identify individual crane components, how to interpret and apply OSHA and ASME guidelines, how to reduce accidents, understanding the three levels of inspection, when to perform a non-destructive crack-detection test and how to set up an in-house crane inspection program.

    Certification Requirements

    • All potential certificate holders must complete an approved program, pass a written examination and have three years experience working with mobile cranes. As of January 2011, the cost is typically around $1000 for a three- or four-day course plus approximately $300 for the certification.
