This category of certification applies to specific Microsoft programs such as Windows, Exhange Server or SQL Server. To get a certification for one of these programs, the prospective MCP must pass the skills and knowledge test or tests associated with the product. In addition to the skill requirements, MCPs must meet the requirements for training experience.
This category of MCP is concerned with the design and implementation of infrastructure related to Microsoft Server programs. Certifications in this area of study require one to two years of experience and the ability to pass the tests for each specific certification. To become an MCP for Windows Server 2000 and 2003, candidates must pass seven exams spread across four categories. MCSE-certified MCPs may also specialize in either security or messaging aspects of either server program.
An MCP that obtains MCDBA credentials must meet several standards. Typical candidates have the equivalent of a year's experience working with SQL Server software. MCPs with this certification are required to pass one exam from each of the four categories. These four categories include server design and administration for SQL Server, a general exam for Windows Server and an elective category.
This category of MCP certification is for IT professionals who provide remote desktop support. Potential MCP candidates need the equivalent of six to 12 months of experience in this field to become certified. This certification requires applicants to pass two tests in any order. These tests are operating system-specific, so an MCP with an MCDST certification for Windows XP will need to take additional exams to be certified for any other operating system.
