Consumers can seek certification to legally operate a mobile crane in the United States at one of many OSHA training centers across the country. Certification to operate, maintain or inspect a mobile crane is granted only as a result of passing a rigorous battery of instruction and testing.
OSHA is responsible for creating regulations that promote a safe work environment. Operating a mobile crane improperly creates a hazardous work environment. For this reason, OSHA requires that all crane operators undergo proper training. Two courses that OSHA may require for mobile crane certification are "Cranes and Rigging Safety for Construction" and "Cranes and Materials Handling for General Industry."
OSHA mobile crane certification courses are available at many colleges and universities. For example, training courses are offered at the University of Buffalo in New York, West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, the Georgia Tech Research Institute in Atlanta and the University of California-San Diego.
