Ohio Fire Science Colleges

Most firefighters hold high school diplomas, but an associate's or bachelor's degree in fire science technology may greatly improve your chances of finding employment in the field. Four accredited schools in Ohio offer training and degrees in fire science technology.
  1. Lakeland Community College

    • Lakeland Community College, located in Kirtland, is Ohio's only community college-based fire science technology program accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress. Students enrolled in the associate of applied science degree program may attend day or evening classes. Coursework includes fire prevention, hazardous materials, emergency safety and survival, fireground strategy and fire investigation.

    Owens Community College

    • The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredits Owens Community College, located in Toledo, Ohio. It offers an associate of applied science degree in fire science technology with emphasis placed on engineering, enforcement, education and extinguishing. Day or evening courses are available; select courses are also available in a distance learning format. Owens also offers fire officer certification and an option for dual learning with the Ohio Fire Academy.

    Sinclair Community College

    • The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredits Sinclair Community College, located in Dayton, Ohio. It offers an associate in applied science degree in fire science technology. Courses in this program focus on the engineering technology of fire protection issues and include inspection, hazard assessment, warning systems, arson investigation, fire science engineering and emergency response. Also available is an associate of applied science degree in fire technology with a fire administration emphasis. This degree includes courses focused on management, accounting, economics, local and state government, firefighting and administrative duties. Both programs, chartered by the state of Ohio, offer day and evening classes and provide live fire training at the Dayton Fire Training Center.

    University of Cincinnati: College of Engineering and Applied Science

    • The University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science offers an open learning fire service program, consisting primarily of distance learning courses coordinated by the U.S. Fire Administration National Fire Academy. With both associate of applied science and bachelor degrees, the college also offers residency workshops that allow students to complete an entire course on campus in as little as five days. Courses include disaster planning and control, fire tactics, terrorism awareness and planning, fire service building construction and hazardous materials.
