Actuarial Science Colleges in Ohio

Actuaries provide specialized skills in risk management, primarily to the insurance industry and other financial services. Their training includes a strong base of mathematics, statistics and business courses. Attaining certification as an actuary requires an undergraduate degree combined with internships and a lengthy series of credentialing exams.
  1. Kent State University

    • The main campus of Kent State University is located in Kent, in northeastern Ohio. There are seven other campuses around the state, but only the main campus offers an actuarial program. This is delivered as a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with an actuarial concentration. The program requires 37 of the total 121 credits to be taken in actuarial courses.

    The Ohio State University

    • The Ohio State University's main campus is located in Columbus, with five satellite campuses around the state. The actuarial program is delivered as a major within the B.S. Math program. Credentialing exams administered by the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society are a major part of the potential actuary's career path, and the OSU program covers material tested in the first four exams.

    Ohio University

    • Ohio University is located in Athens, south of Columbus. OU's actuarial program is delivered as a major within either a B.A. or a B.S. in Mathematics, with the B.S. the preferred option for most students. The program is weighted toward business courses, and can be used as a minor in business administration.

    Otterbein University

    • Otterbein is the only private university in the state to offer actuarial science as a major in its B.S. program. Both credentialing bodies consider Otterbein's to be an advanced undergraduate program. The campus is located in Westerville, northeast of Columbus.
