Ohio Mortuary Colleges

Throughout the United States, there are several colleges that provide education in mortuary sciences. Within the State of Ohio however, there is only one training program, the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Founded in 1882, CCMS offers a choice of programs. You can work towards an Associates Degree in Applied Science or a Bachelor's Degree in Mortuary Science. The college itself holds accreditation from the American Board of Funeral Services Education, Inc. (ABFSE) and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
  1. History

    • The Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science was founded in 1882 by American mortician Joseph H. Clarke. At its inception, the training at CCMS lasted only a couple of days and provided only the most simplistic training as far as embalming chemicals and body preservation was concerned.

In 1909, however, the school was purchased by Charles O. Dhonau, who was a leading contributor within the subject of embalming, and soon began to offer coursework in aspects of public health as well as human anatomy.
