Bunker Hill Community College offers an associate's degree program in fire protection and safety. The two-year program offers students a foundation in fire prevention and safety, hazardous materials, fire codes, fire equipment and fire hazards and prevention in building construction. Graduates are prepared for jobs in municipal and state fire-service agencies and the insurance industry. The program also prepares candidates for promotion within fire departments. Credits from the program can also be applied to the four-year degree programs in fire science offered at colleges and universities within the state system.

Located less than 10 miles north of Boston and accessible by public transportation, North Shore Community College has one of the more extensive fire science departments in the state's community college system. NSCC offers an associate's degree that students may tailor to prepare for different types of careers--from firefighting to administrative jobs within fire service agencies. The college also offers a certificate program in fire protection geared toward professionals interested in enhancing their credentials.

Located 10 miles south of Boston, Quincy College is a public community college run by the city of Quincy. The school offers an associate's degree in fire science technology with requirements and electives similar to those of state-run community colleges. However, Quincy College's program is aimed more at possible candidates for jobs within municipal and state firefighting departments. Students must complete an interpersonal communications course and, unlike other degree programs that focus fire prevention and protection, the emphasis of Quincy College's program is on fire science.
