Central Florida Community Colleges

Central Florida is home to a number of community colleges that were established in the 1960s to provide Florida residents with a more accessible means to education. Community colleges fall under the Florida College System, a network of 28 colleges throughout Florida that serves about 1 million students. The main degree programs offered by Florida College System institutions include an associate in arts, science and applied science. Beginning in 2009 the Florida College System authorized its colleges to begin offering a bachelor of science degree to meet increased demand for education by Florida's workforce.
  1. Brevard Community College

    • Brevard Community College is on 87 acres next to Clear Lake in Cocoa. The college, established in 1960 as Brevard Junior College, later combined with Carver Junior College to form Brevard Community College. The college has four locations throughout Brevard County, including a learning center at Kennedy Space Center. Degree programs include associate degrees in arts, applied science and science; an applied technical diploma, a college credit certificate and a postsecondary adult vocational certificate.

    Valencia Community College

    • Valencia Community College is located in Orlando on a 180-acre campus. Named Valencia Junior College when it was founded in 1967, the college changed its name to Valencia Community College when it moved to its permanent location in Orlando in 1971. Valencia educates more than 60,000 students per year on six satellite campuses with two additional campuses planned. Degree programs at Valencia include general studies, arts and entertainment, business, communications, criminal justice and paralegal studies, engineering and architecture, health sciences, horticulture, hospitality and culinary, information technology, science and math and social sciences.

    Seminole State College of Florida

    • Seminole State College of Florida, located in Sanford, was established in 1966 as Seminole Junior College. It changed to its current name in 1977. As of 2011, the school provided educational services to more than 32,000 students. SSCF mainly focuses on two-year degree programs in areas such as art, engineering, business, communications, education and health but in 2011 the college began offering five bachelor's degree programs including a bachelor of science in architecture engineering technology, business information management, construction and information systems technology and a bachelor of applied science in interior design.

    Santa Fe College

    • Santa Fe College in Gainesville was founded in 1965. As of 2009, Santa Fe College served 16,000 students, up from 1,000 students that first enrolled in classes in 1966. The main campus is set on 175 acres, and the college has a number of extension campuses throughout the county. The degree programs offered by Santa Fe College include associate of arts, science, applied science and community education. In addition to associate degree programs, the college provides English language training, GED preparation, a family literacy program and an adults with disabilities program.
