The Best Minnesota Colleges

Minnesota offers over 140 two-year community colleges, private colleges and universities, many of which are located near the major cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. While there are a number of good schools in the state, a few schools stand out as the best according to their program offerings, individual student attention and excellent resources. Minnesota offers high-ranking schools in both public university and private college settings.
  1. University of Minnesota Duluth

    • According to the "U.S. News and World Report," the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) ranks 36th among universities in the Midwest with master's-level degree programs. With an undergraduate enrollment of about 11,600, this university offers the benefits of a large university with a smaller student body. UMD offers 75 possible bachelor degree majors, as well as 21 graduate programs. A College of Pharmacy and a two-year School of Medicine are also available. A unique campus offers buildings that are mostly connected via hallways and concourses, providing shelter from the wintry weather near Lake Superior. This selective school generally only accepts students in at least the 65th percentile of their high school class, with a preference for those in at least the 40th percentile.

    St. Olaf College

    • St. Olaf College has a rank of 49th among the "U.S. News and World Report's" tier 1 liberal arts schools. Academics are rigorous at this private college, which was originally founded in 1874 by Norwegian Lutheran immigrants and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church. With only 3,000 undergraduates on campus, students get plenty of individual attention. Majors are offered in 43 programs, and many students graduate with multiple majors. The campus is located in small community just 35 miles south of Minneapolis.

    Carleton College

    • With a rank of 8th among the "U.S. News and World Report's" tier 1 liberal arts schools, Carleton College is highly competitive for prospective students. Located less than an hour from St. Paul, this small school has an enrollment of just under 2,000 students and an average class size of only 18. Bachelor of Arts degrees are offered in 37 majors and 15 concentrations. This private college does not have a religious affiliation. Carleton seeks out applicants who have pursued honors and AP classes in high school as well as above-average standardized test scores.
