Schools for a Maternity Nurse

Maternity nursing is an advanced practice branch of nursing, pursued at the master's degree level. Maternity nurses may work as nurse practitioners or midwives who can assist in labor and delivery and prescribe medications under the supervision of a physician. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008, registered nurses earned a median annual salary of $62,450 with the highest 10 percent earning more than $92,240. Maternity nurses are likely to earn a higher-range salary due to their specialty.

    • The University of New Mexico offers a full-time nurse-midwifery master's degree that students finish in two years. The program includes clinical rotations in Albuquerque and surrounding rural areas. The school gives preference in its application process to experienced RNs (registered nurses) with a bachelor's degree. Since 2002 the program has regularly been ranked Number 3 in nurse-midwife eduction by "U.S. News and World Report." Students are encouraged to take an independent study course to gain labor and delivery experience, interpreting an electronic fetal monitor (EFM) strip, supporting and examining women in labor and becoming familiar with medications used during labor.

    University of Texas at Austin

    • The School of Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin received the "U.S. News and World Report" ranking in the country's top 20 master's programs. The school offers a Master of Science in Maternity Nursing with a specialty in administration, public health or teaching. The program teaches students how to improve pregnant women's and newborn health through nutrition and disease prevention. A portion of the program focuses on the management of cases involving high-risk pregnancies and critical neonatal patients. Graduates are prepared for roles in college faculties, mid-level hospital management or governmental and non-governmental leadership. The college's Nursing Learning Center has an eight-member staff that provides support and educational resources to students and faculty in the nursing program.

    University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

    • The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee offers a 46 credit hour clinical nurse specialist master's program with a focus on maternal-child nursing. The program prepares students for research and advanced practice nursing roles. Students may enter the program with a bachelor's degree in any discipline, with a one year advancement in the course for bachelor's degree holders who are licenced registered nurses (RN). Students complete a comprehensive final clinical project. The school designed a degree program where students pursuing the master's nursing programs can earn an M.B.A. with an additional 39 business-related credit hours. The school offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice curriculum for studies beyond the master's degree.
