Nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses with specialized nursing education. The duties of the nurse practitioner include physical assessment and history taking, ordering diagnostic testing, interpreting lab test results, diagnosing illness and prescribing treatment. In some states, nurse practitioners may prescribe medications and practice without physician supervision.

    • The University of California San Francisco School of Nursing offers several nurse practitioner specialties, including acute care, family, adult, pediatrics, midwifery and women's health. Students in the NP program also have a choice of four minors: health policy, genomics, HIV/AIDS and mental health. Applicants may gain entrance to the NP program through UCSF's master's entry or the traditional MSN track. Both award the Masters of Science in nursing degree upon completion.

    University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing

    • University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing NP students may choose from among 11 specialties, including gerontology, pediatric acute care, pediatric critical care, neonatal oncology and pediatric oncology. According to the 2007 U.S. News and World Report, Penn School of Nursing's adult and pediatric nurse practitioner programs rank number one in the country. Students receive the MSN degree or a post-master's certificate upon completion of the program.

    Seton Hall University College of Nursing Online MSN

    • Established in 1937, Seton Hall University College of Nursing offers an online program leading to a Master of Science in nursing and nurse practitioner license. The program combines interactive online learning with advanced clinical training within the student's local area. Students also attend three weekend residencies. Specialties include pediatrics, adult care and gerontology. Seton Hall University College of Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

    Drexel University Online MSN Program

    • Drexel University offers three nurse practitioner specialties, an MSN obtainable online. Nursing students may specialize in women's health, adult acute care or adult psychiatric mental health. Some campus attendance is required, and clinical training sites may be limited to certain states depending upon chosen specialty. Entrance into the program is very competitive. Prospective students must have earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from a college of nursing accredited by the National League of Nursing (NLN) and must have a grade point average above 3.0 with a 3.25 earned on the last 60 units of the BSN. The program is accredited by the NLN and CCNE.
