Nurse practitioners perform the duties of primary and specialty care providers. They can work in collaboration with physicians or independently, and are able to prescribe medication in all 50 states. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for all registered nurses is estimated to grow 22 percent from 2008 to 2018. The state of Mississippi Board of Nursing approves several master’s degree programs across the state.

    • The Mississippi University for Woman grants a Master of Science for Nursing. The program offers three specializations for nurse practitioners: family nurse practitioner, geriatric nurse practitioner and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. The master’s degree program is 12 months long. Requirements for applicants include a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited program, an unrestricted RN license and a minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse.

    Alcorn State University

    • Alcorn State University has a Master of Science in nursing program with the specialization of family nurse practitioner. Students can attend class on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students can complete the program in four full semesters and one summer session, and part-time students have up to six years to complete the program. Applicant requirements include a grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate work, one year of clinical experience as a registered nurse during the five years prior to applying and at least two letters of recommendation.

    Delta State University

    • Delta State University has a Master of Science in nursing program with a specialization of family nurse practitioner. The school also offers specialty courses in gerontological nurse practitioner, psychiatric/mental nurse practitioner-family and psychiatric/mental nurse practitioner-adult through the Mississippi Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing. Full-time students can complete a master’s degree in four semesters. Applicant requirements include a bachelor’s degree, a minimum of two years of continuous clinical nursing experience as a registered nurse and three letters of recommendation.

    • The University of Mississippi offers the Master of Science in Nursing with specializations in family nurse practitioner, gerontological nurse practitioner, psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner and adult acute care nurse practitioner. The length in programs varies from three to five semesters for full-time students, and part-time students have up to six years to complete their program. Applicant requirements include satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), an unrestricted RN license and three letters of reference.

    • The University of Southern Mississippi offers a Master of Science in Nursing with specializations in family nurse practitioner, gerontological nurse practitioner or psychiatric nurse practitioner. The family nurse practitioner program is four semesters in length and the gerontological and psychiatric nurse practitioner programs are five semesters in length. Application requirements include proof of current CPR certification, proof of necessary immunizations and three letters of recommendation.
