A List of Graduate Schools in Psychology

Psychologists study groups of people or work with individuals to help them with mental or social problems. To work in high-level psychology jobs, it's often necessary to obtain a master's or doctoral degree. It typically takes two to five years to complete a graduate program.
  1. Stanford University

    • U.S. News and World Report has consistently ranked Stanford University's graduate program in psychology as one of the top programs in the United States. Graduate students can specialize in neuroscience, affective science or cognitive or developmental psychology. The program admits about 10 to 15 students each year. The degree program is intended for students who plan to pursue their Ph.D. after finishing their master's work. The psychology department requires applicants to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and recommends that they also take the GRE psychology test.

    University of California-Berkeley

    • The University of California-Berkeley's graduate psychology program also was ranked high by U.S. News and World Report. The university allows graduate students to specialize in areas such as behavioral neuroscience. The graduate program only admits 20 students each year and those students must plan to pursue a Ph.D. To be considered, students must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0.

    University of Wisconsin-Madison

    • At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduate students in psychology can specialize in perception and cognitive neuroscience, among other areas. The program admits 23 to 44 students each year. Prospective students need a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 to be considered.

    University of Pennsylvania

    • The University of Pennsylvania does not have specializations for psychology graduate students, but it does feature research on the brain, cognitive and decision science and clinical, positive and social psychology. Many of the applicants who are accepted into the program have a 3.7 GPA or higher and a GRE score of 1280 to 1600. The program accepts about 10 graduate students each year.
