Obtaining a degree in psychology is a good way to advance your career. With so many colleges to choose from, it can be difficult to determine which school is best for you. Luckily, U.S. News and World Report ranks psychology programs each year. Ranking criteria are based on the surveys by academic experts and factors such as graduation rates, starting salaries after graduation and student-faculty ratio.

    • Stanford University in Stanford, California topped the 2009 rankings. Stanford's psychology programs emphasize research training, especially in the areas of developmental, social and affective science as well as cognitive and neurological psychology. The Department of Psychology admits an average of 10 to 15 graduate students each year. Stanford offers undergraduate, non-terminal master's and doctorate degrees.

    • University of California, Berkeley tied for first place on U.S. News and World Report's list. Programs focus on language development and social awareness, connections between genetics, the environment and behavior as well as human memory. The graduate school's 2010 admission rate was 5.6 percent. Berkeley offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and doctoral degrees.
