Upon completion of the program, students earn a Master of Education degree and are not required to complete a research manuscript or thesis. Three track options are available within the counseling psychology program which includes school counseling, sports psychology and career counseling and development.

The University at Albany is the second highest ranked school offering counseling psychology programs at a master's degree level. Students have three options including school counseling, mental health counseling and rehabilitation counseling. Each program accepts between 10 and 15 students per year. Required courses for the school counseling option include introduction to counseling theory and practice and foundations and techniques of group counseling. Required courses for the mental health counseling option include behavioral disorders and psychology of disability. Required courses for the rehabilitation option include medical aspects of disability and principles and practice in rehabilitation.

The University of Iowa is the third highest ranked school for master's degree programs in counseling psychology. Students can choose to pursue a Master of Arts degree in school counseling or rehabilitation and mental health counseling. Required courses for the school counseling option include counseling gifted and talented students and introduction to gifted education. Required courses for the rehabilitation and mental health counseling option include theories of counseling, introduction to group counseling and issues and ethics in counseling.

The University of North Texas is the fourth highest-ranking school to offer a master's degree in counseling psychology. Students choose to pursue a Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree and upon completion of the program, students are prepared to work in hospital and rehabilitation settings as well as community colleges, universities or private practices. The program is designed to be completed in two and one half years on a full-time schedule. Required courses include introductory counseling theory, occupational information, human development and cognitive and personality assessment.
