Graduate Schools for Counseling Psychology

Clinical counseling psychology programs give students the ability to develop competencies in counseling a wide variety of clients and treat a range of issues, such as mental health problems, relationship problems and child and adolescent psychological disorders. Most counseling psychology graduate schools require a commitment of five to six years, which typically includes a full year of internship. Following graduation, counseling psychology professionals can work in private practice, mental health centers, schools or in research and academic settings.
  1. University of Notre Dame

    • University of Notre Dame's counseling psychology program, accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), trains students in the scientist-practitioner model of psychology and is best suited for individuals who want to follow teaching, academic and research careers. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program gives students foundations for the assessment of psychological disorders as well as treatment and intervention planning. Students complete a minimum of three research projects during the five-year program in addition to four clinical practicum courses and an entire year of internship. Almost all students attending Notre Dame's graduate school receive full-tuition scholarships and are offered multi-year fellowships and assistantships that provide a nine-month stipend.

    • Washington State University offers students master's degree programs in counseling as well as an APA-accredited Doctor of Philosophy in counseling psychology program. Students have the option of pursuing a master's degree focused on school counseling--in which they earn the Master of Education (Ed.M.) degree--or community counseling, in which students earn the Master of Arts (M.A.) in counseling.

Washington State University's doctoral program trains students as clinical practitioners of counseling psychology and takes five years to complete, including the fifth-year internship. While the program prepares counseling psychologist generalists instead of specialists, the program emphasizes multicultural counseling, hypnosis and attentional processes, and children, adolescent and family counseling. Washington state residents pay approximately $8,500 in tuition per year for the doctoral program while nonresidents pay around $21,000, according to the school's 2010-11 cost of attendance; however, many students receive tuition waivers.

The program places an emphasis on diversity, such as socioeconomic differences and disabilities in urban societies. During the program, students receive core training in counseling psychology in addition to choosing a sub-specialty. Students can receive tuition waivers and are also eligible for graduate assistantships. Yearly stipends for assistantships pay $16,000 as of the 2007 academic year.
