Baruch College offers both the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in industrial and organizational psychology. The master's degree program emphasizes both the theoretical framework of I/O psychology and the application of theories to business. It consists of 36-credit hours of coursework, including the required thesis or alternative, group research thesis option. The doctoral program consists of 72-credit hours and places heavy emphasis on developing basic and applied research skills. Students are trained for both academic and practitioner careers. Students in the doctoral program complete both a master's thesis and dissertation. The doctoral program is competitive; as of 2010 Baruch received about 90 applications each year while offering acceptance to around 10 students. All students receive some form of funding through assistantships or fellowships.

Central Michigan University offers both a terminal master's program and a doctorate in industrial-organizational psychology, which prepares students for applied careers in business, consulting, government, research and university settings. The master's program takes two years to complete, while the doctoral program requires four to five years of study. Both programs involve taking a balanced curriculum involving personnel psychology, organizational psychology and research. As of 2010, Michigan residents pay around $500 per credit hour for the graduate programs, while out-of-state students pay around $800 per credit hour.

Rice University's Doctor of Philosophy program in industrial and organizational psychology prepares students for both university-level teaching and research careers, as well as careers in applied settings. Doctoral students join a "research interest group (RIG)" when entering the program, which allows students to collaborate with both faculty mentors and other students whose research interests match their own. Topics studied in the I/O psychology research interest group include motivation at work, job performance and team training.
