The Top Online Schools for a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology

You'd like to earn your bachelor's degree in psychology from a highly rated online school, but you're not sure how to find the best one. Luckily, the Online Education Database, an independent, for-profit organization, ranked online degree programs in 2009. Schools were evaluated on eight criteria: acceptance rate, financial aid, graduation rate, peer Web citations, retention rate, scholarly citations, student-faculty ratio and years accredited.The best schools on the list were accredited, included in the U.S. Department of Education's College Navigator database, offered more than one online degree and made it possible to earn more than half of their degree programs online.

    • Coming in first on the Online Education Database's list, Nova Southeastern University offers an online bachelor's of science in psychology through the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. Nova Southeastern University's distance-learning program uses instruction methods such as asynchronous--or non-real-time--discussion groups, threaded discussion boards and real-time group classes. Students are not required to visit the campus in person.

      Nova's degree program requires 84 credit-hours to complete. According to the school's website, the psychology program emphasizes research; students are encouraged to participate in faculty research projects on topics such as post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep problems and the effects of stress on the body.

    Regent University

    • Regent University, ranked in second place by the Online Education Database, offers a bachelor's of science in psychology through the Regent School of Psychology and Counseling. Regent uses the Blackboard online learning system, which includes asynchronous discussions and threaded discussion boards. In order to learn the software, new students can participate in a Blackboard tutorial at the beginning of the program. Students can attend class at any time that is convenient. The school says graduates of the program will have a deep understanding of psychological theory and methodology, and the ability to think logically about psychological issues. As Regent is a religious university, all curriculum is presented from a Christian perspective.

    Upper Iowa University

    • Upper Iowa University ranked third on the Online Education Database's list. The school offers an online bachelor of science degree in psychology. The program employs both asynchronous discussion groups and real-time student-faculty interaction. Students must complete 36 semester credits within the psychology curriculum, a general-education core curriculum, and elective credits for a total of 120 credits. Required coursework includes classes in elementary statistics, research methods and personality. Elective classes include adjustment, biology and behavior, group dynamics, and gender roles.
