Anesthesia Nursing Schools

Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) are a level in the advanced practice nursing field. According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, this gender-balanced branch of nursing is 51 percent female and 49 percent male. The field is one of the oldest nursing specialties, dating to the Civil War.

    • The Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Texas Christian University offers a master of science in nurse anesthesia that is a 28-month program, which includes one year of course study and a 16-month hospital residency. A doctoral program is also available, which encompasses the curriculum of the nurse anesthesia program, preceded by eight months of online study. As of April 2010, the program was in the approval process with the Council On Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.

    Truman Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia

    • The school of nurse anesthesia is a branch of the Truman Medical Center. A certified registered nurse anesthetist master's degree program is offered in partnership with the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The 36-month graduate program begins with 12 months of full-time enrollment at the university. An anesthesia-focused curriculum runs concurrent with the 24-month clinical practice portion at one of the region's hospitals or medical centers.

    University of Detroit Mercy

    • According to the University of Detroit Mercy McAuley School of Nursing, 100 percent of the graduates in the CRNA program are offered employment upon graduation, many with signing bonuses, desirable relocation and competitive salaries. A large portion of the program's courses are available online, and exam testing is done on computer to simulate the state-administered exam. The program is available in 27- or 39-month format, with an estimated 50- to 60-hour weekly time commitment. CRNA program graduates can pursue the master of science degree that includes clinical rotations at 20 different medical facilities in the Detroit metro area.

    University of Southern California

    • The Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California was southern California's first medical school. Nurse anesthesia students may elect for an optional specialty anesthesia fellowship in addition to the program's minimum 550 clinical case load. The coursework portion of the training totals 45 credit hours. Clinical studies take place at more than 10 area hospitals, including the acclaimed Cedars Sinai Medical Center.
