List of Universities With BS/MD Programs

Joint Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine degree programs allow qualified students to gain entrance into medical school before their senior year of college. High school students who are eligible for these programs must meet strict admission requirements including: having high grades, a record of community service and strong science backgrounds. In addition to completing pre-med coursework, undergraduates are required to maintain high GPAs and participate in program specific activities in order to maintain their status in BS/MD programs.
  1. University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

    • The University of Pittsburgh is the highest ranked medical school with a joint BS-MD program on the 2010 U.S. News & World Report list of top research medical schools. High school seniors who have gained undergraduate entrance into Pitt take their first step in applying for the medical school's 'Guaranteed Admit' program by indicating 'pre-medicine' or 'bioengineering study' on their admission applications. Students must then submit two recommendation letters, write an essay, show evidence of community service and have an excellent academic record. The medical school invites selected students for interviews. Students must maintain a 3.75 GPA throughout their undergraduate years, seek medical and research opportunities and perform community service activities in order to maintain their medical school eligibility. Students apply for medical school at the end of their junior year. The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is not required.

    University of California, San Diego School of Medicine

    • Admission to the University of California 'San Diego's Medical Scholar Program' is limited to students who are residents of California. Only twelve high school seniors per year are accepted. The program accepts applications by invitation only to students who have gained undergraduate admission. High school students must have a 4.0 GPA, show strong leadership skills and community service involvement, submit two recommendation letters, appear for an interview and write an essay. Students can choose their undergraduate major. The MCAT is not required. UCSD is ranked sixteenth on the 2010 U.S. News & World Report list of top research medical schools.

    Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine

    • Northwestern University's 'Honor Program in Medical Education' is unique in that students may take time off in between earning their undergraduate degrees and continuing their medical school education. Students are free to choose their undergraduate major. They must show interest in the program by requesting an application no later than December 1st of their senior year of high school. High schools must complete a required list of courses in order to be considered for entrance in the joint degree program. The HPME application is separate from the undergraduate admission process. After submitting the HPME application, students are invited for an interview. Unlike some other joint programs, the MCAT is required. Northwestern is the eighteenth-ranked university on the 2010 U.S. News & World Report list of top research medical schools.
