University of Detroit Mercy

• The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) in Detroit, Michigan, offers one of the oldest nurse anesthesia programs in the nation. Although UDM has been offering the nurse anesthesia program only since 2004, the program's origins trace back to 1942, when the school was known as the Mt. Caramel Mercy Hospital. The program requires courses in the classroom setting plus additional clinical training and a project that is akin to the master's thesis required by many schools. The program at UDM can be completed in two and a half to three and a half years. Areas covered by the UDM program includes studies in anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, pathophysiology and nursing principles.

California State University, Fullerton

• The nurse anesthesia program at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) is considerably flexible in its delivery format. The CSUF nurse anesthesia program offers courses in both traditional and distance education formats. The master of science degree offered by CSUF requires students to obtain 71 credit hours, some of which are obtained through clinical nursing experience gained in local medical facilities. The CSUF program offers courses in basic nursing anesthesia practice, advanced decision making, nursing theory and practice, evaluation and research in nursing and clinical studies in nursing anesthesia.

Virginia Commonwealth University

• Virginia Commonwealth University's (VCU) nursing anesthesia program is one of the nation's oldest. Founded in 1969, it is a 71-credit-hour program that requires courses in fields such as nursing anesthesia practice, physiology, medicinal chemistry, pathophysiology and pharmacology, among others. Like the program at CSUF, VCU provides students with distance education options in addition to the traditional on-campus programs. Unlike many programs that only offer a master's degree program, VCU also offers a doctoral program in nursing anesthesia (DNAP) and a Ph.D. as well.
