Learning the field of nursing through the Army's ROTC program provides future nurses with real world experience that is not available through a traditional college setting. Cadets benefit from one-on-one training and mentoring to learn the steps it takes to be successful in the medical field. By taking advantage of the ROTC's Nurse Summer Training Program, students work in Army hospitals throughout the U.S. or Germany to learn the ropes of a career as an Army Nurse Corps Officer during the three week training program. An Army Nurse Corps Officer mentors and trains each student to prepare them for a career as either an Army nurse or nurse in the private sector.

The first takes place at Fort Sam Houston in Texas and lasts 12 months, with the second phase to completed at one of six Army facilities nationwide during the remaining 18 months. Students receive advanced training in the study of nurse anesthesia and are most likely assigned to a U.S. Army medical treatment facility or a field unit.
