Midwifery Courses in Australia

In Australia, there are two ways of qualifying as a midwife. The direct entry path allows a prospective midwife to enroll on a three-year degree course, leading to a Bachelor of Midwifery, or B.Mid qualification. If you are already a qualified nurse, you can enroll in a post-graduate course to specialize in midwifery. Postgraduate Diploma courses typically run for one year.
  1. University of Queensland Bachelor of Midwifery

    • The University of Queensland offers a three-year full time degree course leading to a B.Mid qualification. The program includes general nursing courses, taken in the first semester of year one, which prepare students for the specialized midwifery courses that follow. Three general nursing courses are completed with a clinical practice course. The second semester of the first year of the course consists of four dedicated midwifery courses, including Preparing for birth and parenting, preconception and pregnancy planning, and finishes with a second clinical practice course. The remaining two years of the course consists of further midwifery courses including those dealing with high risk pregnancy, promoting normal birth, immediate post-natal care, and caring for vulnerable newborn babies, plus four additional clinical practice courses. Graduates may become eligible for membership of the Australian college of Midwives.
