Florida International University is located in Miami, Florida. FIU's anesthesia nursing program is designed for registered nurses who hold a bachelor's degree in nursing or other sciences. The program runs for seven semesters, or approximately two years, and contains classes in pharmacology, pathophysiology, chemistry, professional nursing, research methods, local anesthesiology and advanced bio-science. Clinical courses and specialty rotations are completed at several local hospitals. Students have access to a brand-new simulation center where they put their nursing skills to the test on mannequins. Students must have a bachelor's degree, completed certain science and mathematical prerequisite courses and experience working as a registered nurse. Mayo School of Health Sciences offers a full-time, 30-month nurse anesthesia master's degree program for registered nurses who hold a bachelor's degree in nursing or other science field. Courses in the program include medical physiology, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, fundamentals of anesthesia, research and clinical internships. Admission requirements include having a 3.0 GPA, at least one year working in intensive care as a nurse, having an RN license, being able to communicate in fluent English, holding health insurance and passing a health, drug and background test. University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, Iowa. The nurse anesthesia program at University of Iowa is ranked fifth in the country by "U.S. News and World Report." The program lasts 36 months and includes both didactic and clinical learning. Students who are enrolled in the program must take courses in human anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, emerging science, basic principles of anesthesia and clinical anesthesia, among others. To gain admission into the program, you must be a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree, have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, complete all of the prerequisite courses, have one year of full-time critical care nursing experience, and provide three professional recommendations with a Statement of Purpose. Completing the 3-year program will earn students a doctor of nursing degree and allow them to sit for the CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist) exam, as well as the ARNP (advanced registered nurse practitioner) exam.
