Certified registered nurse anesthetists are registered nurses who have been specially trained through a graduate degree program to administer anesthesia. According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, certified nurse anesthetists are responsible for providing 32 million anesthetics in the United States annually and for administering two-thirds of all anesthetic care in rural areas.     • Texas Christian University offers two academic programs to train certified nurse anesthetists. The first is a master's degree course that takes 28 months to complete; the second is a doctor of nursing practice degree program that is completed in 36 months. Both programs cover coursework in advanced anatomy and physiology, chemistry, pathophysiology, pharmacology and research, as well as a 16-month residency, during which students receive practical training in a hospital setting. Students in the doctoral program also must complete an additional 8 months of online coursework.

    • Texas Wesleyan University offers a master's of science in nurse anesthesia degree for those seeking to become certified nurse anesthetists. For admission to the university's nurse anesthesia program, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university, scored at least 1,000 on the GRE combined exam, and hold a current registered nurse's license in the United States. Students who are accepted will take courses in research methods in nurse anesthesia, medical physical science, medical pharmacology and principles of anesthesia practice, as well as complete 23 credit hours of clinical practical training.

    • The University of Texas—Houston offers a master's degree in nurse anesthesia for those pursuing a career as nurse anesthetists. The university's program trains nurses to provide patients with general, local and regional anesthesia, as well as to administer conscious sedation. All nursing students must have a personal computer and basic computer skills. Nurse anesthesia coursework at the university includes classes in statistics in nursing; anatomy, physiology and biochemistry for nurse anesthesia; information systems in advanced practice nursing and fundamentals of nurse anesthesia practice.
